Sky Clearance & Obstruction Guide
Starlink needs a completely unobstructed view of the sky to hold its connection to the satellite constellation. Five minutes with the free Starlink app before pickup day prevents almost every connectivity issue we see in the field.
Trees, roof overhangs, ship masts, and even thin branches will drop your link mid-stream. There is no firmware workaround — the dish needs a true line of sight to passing satellites.
- Step 1Download the Starlink app
Free on iOS and Android. You don't need a Starlink account to run the obstruction check.
- Step 2Stand at your install spot
Walk to the exact location you plan to deploy the dish — rooftop, dock, deck, or clearing.
- Step 3Run 'Check for Obstructions'
Use the app's AR scanner to sweep the sky. It flags trees, eaves, masts, or canopy edges that will drop your signal.
- Step 4Confirm a clean northern sky
Across Canada, Starlink prefers a clear cone facing north. Relocate or trim before pickup day if the app shows red.
