What's happened

Amazon renamed Project Kuiper to Amazon Leo on November 13, 2025, saying it then had more than 150 satellites in orbit (Amazon). In September 2025 an Amazon executive said service would come to Canada and several other countries in early 2026 (SpaceQ). By May 2026, Amazon reported 304 satellites deployed over 11 launches, with preview service for select business customers and no firm date for individual sign-ups (GeekWire). In July 2026, PlanHub noted Amazon had still not confirmed pricing, regional availability or residential plans for Canada (PlanHub).

How it compares to Starlink

Starlink had more than 8,000 satellites in orbit at the end of 2025, against Amazon's 150-plus at the time (Light Reading). Amazon's network is growing fast, and more competition should help Canadian prices over time. But right now Starlink is the only low-orbit service a cabin, lodge or crew in NL can actually use.

What it means for you

If you're unsure which network will win, don't buy hardware yet. A Starlink Mini rental gets you online for a trip or a season now, and leaves you free to choose later. Compare costs in our satellite internet in Canada guide.

Frequently asked

Is Amazon Leo (Kuiper) available in Newfoundland yet?

Not for regular customers. Amazon has said Canada is among its early markets and has offered preview service to select business customers, but it has not published Canadian consumer pricing or a sign-up date.

Should I wait for Amazon Leo instead of using Starlink?

If you need internet this season, no. Starlink works across NL today. Renting a Starlink Mini lets you get online now without locking into hardware while the market changes.
