How to Power a Starlink Mini From Your Truck

In normal use we measure roughly 25–40W, with brief spikes higher on boot-up in cold weather. Call it about 3A at 12V while running. Over 8 hours that is approximately 250–300Wh — well inside what a healthy truck battery or a mid-size power station can give up.

1. 12V direct (best). A DC barrel cable straight from the battery or an accessory socket skips the inverter entirely. No conversion losses, quietest, and it is what we ship with our own kits.

2. Portable power station. A 300–600Wh station runs the Mini most of a day and keeps your truck battery untouched. Use the station's 12V output, not the AC outlet, if it has one.

3. Inverter to the wall brick. Works, wastes roughly 10–15% to heat, and the inverter fan draws power itself. Fine as a backup, not as a plan.

A truck starting battery does not like being run down. If you are parked and online for more than about two hours with the engine off, either idle periodically, run off a separate deep-cycle or auxiliary battery, or use a power station. A 100W solar panel roughly keeps pace with the Mini in summer daylight; size up for shoulder season.

Keep the DC run short and use proper gauge wire — thin cable drops voltage and the dish will brown out under load. Any joint that lives outside the cab needs a weather-sealed connector and a drip loop, or salt spray will find it by the second trip.

Power is only half of it — you still need clear northern sky from where you park. Renting a Mini for a weekend settles both questions for $29/day before you spend on batteries and mounts.
